The MORPHEUS compound microscope is well-suited to telehealth (eHealth) applications as a computer serves as the user interface. All mechanical and electronic functions of the microscope are controlled directly from the computer via proprietary USB electronics.

High quality microscope lenses matched to a high resolution video camera provide the highest quality of image possible. Options such as brightfield, darkfield, and cross-polarized illumination, are easily inserted into the modular design.

In terms of store-and-forward telemedicine, this compound microscope is able to digitize slidemount specimens at unsurpassed resolution. For example, a 25mm by 20mm tissue section would be digitized as 180,000 by 140,000 pixels. Acquiring and storing images of this detail allows researchers and physicians to review patient data at appropriate magnification.

The MORPHEUS also lends itself to interactive telemedicine in the sense of remote diagnosis. While the patient might be in a hard-to-reach location, the physician can review a biopsy sample instantly over today's telecommunications infrastructure. The microscope is controlled in realtime over the internet or secure point-to-point transmission.
